There May not be to many businesses in town but think of the revenue that the town could make from an increase in Commercial property tax. There is no reason it should be exactly the same as our real estate tax.
Please let me know if these numbers are not accurate, I found them online, most from the town websites.

The numbers don't lie! It leaves me feeling pretty bad about what we are offering our children, I thought we wanted what was best for them...
ReplyDeleteI'd be interested to know (for both this post and the post about how much districts spend on their students) what each districts ranking is. Are we comparing apples to apples? I notice that Rehoboth isn't listed which is supposed to be one of the best in the area, correct?!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I feel like it's a catch-22 for the businesses. So many are already struggling, this would do them in. Right? Or am I not understanding something? All of the above let "big businesses" in to their towns as well... Based on the above it looks like neither homeowners OR businesses are paying enough in taxes here in Westport.
I'm asking these questions because I truly want to understand... not because I'm being argumentative. I hope that comes across.
Many of the parents in this town have been asking for higher taxes and are willing to do there part. Some making donations in representing what the tax increase would be. My personal opinion is that the seperate tax rates would not benefit this town, but from what we are hearing the town is not supportive of an increase in property tax either. Also, in regard to the school spending question, of the 60 school districts with similar demographics, Westport is listed as 57th. Reheboth's tax rate is 8.70 I can't find there school spending, not sure if that is b/c they are combined with Dighton later on. I will look into it more. Most towns allow big business and I think that is something we need to look into, and not giving them a tax break when they do. ( CVS)

Thanks for getting these numbers Jenna, it helps put it in context (for me at least) a little better. I personally would be on board with an across the board tax raise, but it seems like the "older" population of Westport always votes it down?
ReplyDeleteThere's so many things that need to evolve in this town to make it work better overall. The taxes, looking into big business (and I'm talking about corporations and start-ups too)...
To compare "apples to apples", Dr. Colley has a presentation of similar size schools in the area in regards to property taxes/commercial taxes. Click on the link below. Under MINUTES, click on Budget Presentation under 12/15/09.
